Working in Egypt - Teaching

Many of our dear brothers and sisters have a desire to travel abroad and study Arabic and Quran. This choice can be difficult for many people due to the financial commitment required. In relation to this, I simply want to provide a few options which brothers and sisters can utilise to potentially fund themselves whilst looking to study abroad. My direct experience has been within teaching and it is within this field I will talk about a few different avenues that could be explored.
Teaching opportunities exist in the following areas and the pay can differ significantly. Please consider the economic climate has fluctuated in the recent years so the numbers quoted may vary across location, time and company;

  • Private tuition
This is generally teaching at your flat or the flat of a student and teaching can include English, GCSE’s tuition in various subjects especially core subjects, Business English etc. There is usually no criteria as long as you are a native speaker but specific individuals may request other qualifications to teach specific subjects. Also, the number of students will depend on how you market yourself from word of mouth to advertising online etc.

-        Building a student base and getting your name out – Use free classified ads pages online which can be searched on Google specifically for Cairo.

-        Pay – Western students normally charge the locals from 250 ->  450LE. Once you start to specialise and teach at GCSE level you can charge the upper amount. Charges for groups can increase as you may charge 4 students 150 LE each and sometimes it is better to start a little lower and gradually increase as you gain experience.

  • Teaching in Centres
(Smaller English centres)
These are generally focused at teaching local Egyptians English as collective groups.

Pay - (4000-12000LE) per month for full time work but can vary based on the hours you commit.

Criteria - Native speaker of English

  • Private/International Schools/Centers
There are a range of private international schools following different curriculum's such as the British, American, Canadian, German, French etc.
The main private international schools offering GCSE’s across the various compounds such as Sheikh Zayed, Rehab, Tajammo, Madinaty etc. (Easily searchable online - Too many to list)

British council - https://www.britishcouncil.org.eg/en

Pay - (14000-45000LE) per month for full time work but can vary based on the hours you commit.

Criteria - More reputable schools will request an official teaching qualification (PGCE for example from the UK) and other may vary the criteria from having an undergraduate degree to simply being a native speaker.

  • Online Teaching
This is a relatively modern phenomenon and can be ideal if you have a good internet connection which may cost you a little more in Egypt although it is worthwhile in the long run. The hours are usually a little strange as you’ll be teaching students from China, Japan, Taiwan and other Asian countries. This can mean teaching classes around 2-3am midweek but can be a little better on the weekend. The pay varies across institutes and is generally in dollars.

Time – Some companies may give you a limited number of hours so it is good to apply across different companies and work out which one will serve best according to your criteria and wants from the job.

Internet – If you struggle to have a strong wifi connection, then you can invest in a USB Internet Dongle and this can assure a solid connection in most places but can be a little more expensive.

Caution – Some companies deduct the wage transfer fee due to them being based in other countries so clarify this with them and also specify what method of transfer works best for – Paypal, Bank Transfer etc.

TEFL/TESOL/CELTA Certificate - It is ideal if you have a basic TEFL certificate which can be bought from Groupon or similar sites for a relatively cheap cost of less than £20 and can be completed fairly quickly, as it will give you a step ahead of other applicants. Many of these companies will offer basic training and a TEFL certificate as you work with them and can easily be searched online.

Criteria - Some companies ask for formal qualifications in teaching, others ask for teaching experience but there are many who are happy to train you as long as you show good interaction and presentation skills in your interview. They usually ask you to do a small demonstration as part of your formal online interview.
Companies may also only accept candidates from specific countries i.e. UK/US/Canada/Australia.

Lesson Plans - Every company I have experience with provides lesson plans that you teach from so you don't need to create any plans. They are geared to the level of the student you will be teaching so this will not be your stress.

Potential companies you could apply to from the hundreds that exist:

TwoSigmas
M2R Global - https://www.m2rglobal.com/online-esl/
Rosetta Stone
Continuum Education Services
DadaABC
iTutor Group – The following link can be used to apply at iTutor and is a recommendation link from a brother who currently works for them.
  • How to Apply

    1. Yes insha'Allah
As long as you have good writing and speaking English skills, you can find jobs in private tuition, some schools will take you on and also some English centres across Cairo.

  2. As Salāmu Alaykum wa RahmatuAllah. Would you happen to have a link to an Egypt chat group for brothers from the West interested in moving to Egypt?

Unfortunately, we can't share such groups due to spamming.

Reach out to Azhar graduates online and they will try to help and direct you.

    1. Unfortunately, with a constantly changing market it is difficult as many people have left Egypt.

Much of the information still applies except salaries which may have changed.
Also, use job boards in your country to find opportunities.
