Private Studies or Markaz?

As well as being one of the most commonly spoken languages in the world, Arabic is also the language of a rich Islamic heritage. It is the language of the book of Allah, his Prophet and generations of Islamic scholarship. Therefore the benefits of learning the Arabic Language are immeasurable, and that is why students are so eager to learn the language. The quest to learn the Arabic Language has always attracted thousands of students to Egypt. Throughout this article we will highlight a few of the most common institutes and methods of studying Arabic in Cairo.

There are two main methods a student usually takes to begin their Arabic studies while in Egypt; either to enroll into a group classes at a Markaz (institute) or to study privately (one to one). Both have their pros and cons and factors such as a students' goals, budget and current level of understanding which all help to determine which route would be best for him/her.

Group classes at a Markaz

Most institutes have a course designed for non-Arabic speakers to gain proficiency in speaking, reading and writing. Such courses tend to consist of 12-15 levels with each level generally being approximately one month long, however that may differ slightly from institute to institute. Classes are usually 2-3 hours long, 5 days a week, with Friday and Saturday being the weekend.

There are advantages of joining a program of this sort over studying privately. The syllabus is usually well thought out and the teaching tends to be very good. Being in a class room environment with students from all across the world forces a student to converse solely in Arabic. The regular exams also ensure a student is making the expected progress. Group classes also tend to be much cheaper than studying 1 to 1. The price of the group classes in some of the marakiz are:

- Markaz Fajr - 2000egp (£85)

- Markaz Kalimah - 800egp (£35)

- Markaz Nile - 600egp (£25)

Prices are correct of 31st March 2018. In some cases prices do vary depending on the nationality of the students (students from Russia for example might get a discount to enable them to study). The prices stated above are for European / American students.

Each of the above institutes have their own sites which you can visit for more info.

Private Classes

Group classes do tend to move at a fairly slow pace to accommodate for all the students in the class, therefore some students prefer to study 1 to 1 which allows them to move at a quicker speed and to have more direct interaction with the teacher. Alhamdulillaah Cairo is known to have huge numbers of qualified Arabic teachers so finding a private teacher is fairly easy. Depending on availability and experience the prices can vary however, on average private teachers tend to charge between 50-75 EGP per hour.

Please keep an eye out for a more detailed post regarding the curriculum's studying and taught by some of the teachers in Cairo.

    1. Unfortunately we are not aware of any institutes in Alexandria. There were some in the past but we have been told by some students living there that ATM it is very difficult to find good Arabic institutes there. There are some linked to western universities however they tend to focus more on Egyptian dialect rather than fusha for aspiring students of knowledge. We will attempt to ask a brother to write up a piece about life in Alexandria in the near future in sha Allah

    1. Most centres are good if you complete the programme. Studio Arabiyyah offer full packages and cater well for families looking to study together. They also include quran and Arabic packages combined as well offering a lot of additional activities outside the centre.
