Qur'aan in Cairo

Learning and memorising the Qur'an in Cairo

Having produced some of the greatest Qur'an reciters off the last century, from the likes of Mahmood Khalil al-Hosary, Mohammed al-Minshawi and Abdul Basit Abdus Samad, just to name a few, Egypt is without doubt one of the best places in the world to learn the Holy Qur'an. Whether you want to memorise the word of Allah, perfect your tajweed or gain an Ijaazah in the various narrations and styles of recitation, you can find something suited to you in Egypt and Cairo in particular.

We will use this blog post to highlight the various Qur'anic centres and places of learning in Cairo for those interested in travelling to Egypt to study and memorise the Qur'an.

For someone who wants to memorise the Qur'an there are many institutes at which they can do so. Through full time studies, memorising the Qur'an takes 2-3 years on average. However it can be completed in more time or less, depending on the students’ ability, commitment and dedication. There are many methods but the most popular way to do so would be to attend one of the well-known masajid where such programmes are running, such as Masjid al-Haramain and Masjid Fayd Al-rahman.

Masjid al-Haramain
Masjid al-Haramain is based in the 9th District of Nasr City and is one of the busiest centres for Hifdh with a waiting list of students throughout the year. Registration and intake for new students is only open once every few months and once open, the student must submit his name immediately to ensure he secures a place. Classes are run every day from 9am till 5pm. However students can go in at whichever time they wish and are free to leave once they have recited their newly memorised portion as well their daily revision they have been assigned as homework. Over 10 shuyukh teach in the masjid and are seated there throughout the day teaching and listening to students recite. Education is completely free and lunch is also provided often. Many western students have memorised the Qur'an at this centre and continue to do so and thus it is a highly recommended centre for Qur'an studies.

Masjid Fayd Al-Rahman
This Masjid is based in the 8th District of Nasr City on Mustafa al-Nahaas Street. It isn’t as popular as Masjid al-Haramain but it operates using a very similar system. It is open most of the time and various teachers are based in the masjid whom a student can recite to. Like Al-Haramain, they are strict when it comes to attendance and they really push a student to help him memorise. The one advantage it does have over Al-Haramain is the fact that there is no waiting list and a student can go in and register at any time.

Other
Besides the two centres mentioned above there are also several other centres in Cairo and Nasr City in particular for a student to memorise the Qur'an. Markaz Masarawi is also very popular and has various centres all over Cairo with their main centre being on Mustafa al-Nahas Street next door to the popular masjid, Mu'min al-Mohaymin, also known as Masjid Ma'sarawi. However they do not run group classes for Hifdh like Haramain or Fayd ur-Rahman do. Instead they have facilities for private groups (2-5 students) or more popularly, a student can recite 1 to 1 with a Shaykh at a pre-arranged time. At this centre however one can find a teacher for any level and whether it is for Hifdh, Tajweed or to gain an Ijazah. The centre charges approximately 30EGP per hour.

There are also various other centres for Qur'an such as Dar Al-Qalam in 9th District, the centre of Shaykh Muhammad Munshid in the 7th District, Manarat Al Tibyaan in the 10th District, to name a few.

Private studies
Alternatively, a student can also find a teacher to teach him privately. Some teachers travel to students and in some cases students travel to the teacher. For hifdh having a private teacher is not like attending one of the institutes as a student may not get as much time, nor will he find himself in an environment where other students are memorising around him. Therefore the student will need to really push himself and find a teacher who motivates him too. The standard charge for doing Hifdh with a private teacher is between 40-75EGP per hour.

For Tajweed however, the price ranges, starting from 50EGP to about 80EGP and it can even go up to 100EGP depending on the teacher, his availability and his qualifications. It is however rare for a teacher to charge 100EGP unless he is very highly qualified and experienced and also very busy. A general piece of advice would be for students to try to avoid paying such high amounts unless they are seeking the most advanced level of teaching.

Teachers can also be found teaching Qur'an and tajweed in some of the large Masajid in Cairo including Al-Azhar Masjid. In these instances the teachers mostly teach for free.

There are other institutes we haven't managed to discuss in this post but we hope this serves as a short overview for students so anybody wishing to learn Qur'an in Cairo has a good idea of some of the various options to explore.

May Allah grant us ikhlaas and make us from amongst the people of the Qur'an. Ameen.

  2. I use to study at haramain. I just stopped recently . You really need to change this.
Now there are only a few teachers at haramain and it is very unorganized. They have two elderly women who teach arabic and quran when they decide to come. There are not alot of classes some times you may have a person with a higher level of arabic in a class with a a beginner . They have ever one packed together and always changing books. I bought some many books that we would start and then they would stop and go to another . They also favor certain students from certain countries . I had some of the other women there harass me when I tried to tell some one they laughed and even i could hear the teaching talking bad about me. They are not very good people . Some times you will even sit there for a quran lesson and the teacher will never show up or show up late . When I decided to try and leave the teachers harassed me even showed up to my house. When i tried to closed the door the women who was with her. She pushed and hit me and barged on through my flat . Also the owner of the school He is a dirty old man. He made a sexual pass at me and was calling me on my phone numerous of times asking for sex . I dont know how he got my number I guess through the sign up enrollment sheet. When I said no he started to harass me even make up lies . He only stopped when i told him I would contact his wife and let her know what he was doing . I found out later that this is something this man does he preys on foreign women or women that are weak. As he has done this two too other women that I found out about later .The school is very un organized When i was last there they are not open until 9-5 its more like they come in at 10 am maybe stay until 3 pm or when everything want . They are not good teachers not organize the teacher may stop a lesson and talk on her phone and waste the class time . The quran lessons are a joke. you might get afew mins just to read what you memorize they assign anew lesson and you repeat it next week if they show up
It depends . I would advise anyone do not go there for arabic or quran. Go to Markez lisaan or Furquan , Nile center anywhere but haramain . you will be very disappointed After everything i encountered I will never go back to haramain

    1. wacaalaykum assalam sister.

i am sorry about your bad experience with the markaz. People usual go there for memorization of the Quran.(rarely heard someone go there for arabic). As for quran, it is without a doubt the best place to memorization (if you are staying for 1 year or longer, or memorized before.) why i am point this? because harmain follow it own system and it is a very strict curriculum. They don't allow to start with the next juz before you know, everything you have memorized before (feks: if you are finishing juz 5, then you have to take an exam from 1-5 juz then you start at juz 6.) There aim is that when you finished there program you are a hafidh without a doubt.
      - here comes the problem (specially us western students). many student here always want the easiest way, know that is not the route for the best result. Had we had the same mentality has the russian brother, how when they start something the are staying there until they finished. It would had made it a lot easier. May allah give us tawfiq.
last point: -always ask a person who have finished something vs someone who stopped or are in the prossess. It is when the seed that you sowed turn into a full grown tree with fruit, you real can question yourself if it was worth it.
      And allah knows best.

    2. saalaam responding to the one who left the comment, you dont know anything about me just based on a comment because I wanted to post this because I have lived in Egypt for years 14 to be exact . I never knew anything about this place it was recommend to me because it was so cheap. Cheap things are not always good. IF you know the expression be careful what you pay for I had heard some thing from other people one being an Egyptian the other a foreigner but I never listened until it actually happened to me and you are right people do want the easy way but this is not always with foreigners other nationalities do this so you should not just stereotype one set because they are foreigners you are very wrong in doing so as well and you are wrong haramain is the worse place to study at and I would not recommend this to anyone atleast I can say for the women part that they are very unorganized and never was on time and jumping from book to book lesson to lesson teachers showing up one day and not the next time. This is not good I actually did finish memorizing the quran entirely with ijazah but it was not at haramian and I am fluent in the arabic language also not from haramin .Stop giving people this false advise I have actually talked to other students in the past who have said similar about haramian with the way it is and with who runs it . So yes I did manage to get my ijazah in the Quran and I am fluent in arabic languge done but not at haramain. Stop lying about haramin it is not a good place i know this for a fact and I will keep speaking out about it and letting people know do not waste their time to go there not because of only the teachers an director being not good and the classes not organized but because but because of what some of the people have said a few women said the director was making sexual advances to them and some of the teachers were harassing some of the female students . No one and I mean no one should waste their time going there

  3. Also I know for a fact their school haramain has been raided by the police because it was said that the place has ties with the Muslim Brotherhood but you take your risk in going there but as for me never again and I will tell anyone i meet in egypt whether they are foreigner or from the country or another country Do not go to Haramain If you want to get good quality arabic and Quran lessons go to Lisan Al arab, or Markez Furquan , or Nile Centre Those are the best ones in my opinion . Not haramin and atleast for the women part I can say this Haramain is not good

  4. One last thing I will say and then that. Brother you seem unhinged. A women literally told you something bad happened at that place and not only to her but to several other women and the only thing you could come up with was being a foreigner we all want a quick fix lol I dont know what to say to that. Its like you by passed the whole thing where I said the director of the place was making sexual advances at women and even tried to force himself on one of the females Are you really serious to think that because that place is an arabic and quran center the people at it are good . The way you speak it seems you have not been in egypt long or you pick out the stuff that suits you and tune out the rest which is bad . What happen to men being the protectors of the women ? I guess that went out the window because we are in Egypt and its supposed to be so religious well you are wrong its not Ive been in Egypt much long than you and I do have stories and I will tell what happen at haramin and how the people teachers and director is there . Haramain will be famous but not in a good way. Also now days there are many other ways to study arabic and quran by internet online you can find all the arabiya bain yadak the whole series taught by the one who wrote the books online . youtube. I cant speak for the mens part but I can say the womens part was not good not at all as I said not organized no teachers or teachers not showing up not enough classes sometimes you would have people in a class that was a higher level than the others . I am just glad I finished memorizing entire Quran got ijazah and arabic im fluent in but not from haramain Its a bad place . I heard it was closed down and if not I pray that it does close down for good Its bad . just like the people there .

    2. I would not know. I dont go there any more and have not in five years. I finished my arabic and quran studies some where else not haramain and can only speak about the women side being a women. Now for arabic I know they had a few classes there but it went down alot they only had two teachers same with quran the same women taught the quran as well . It was bad . Im not sure what they do any more. The men side I did see was better , I think most went for the quran . The men side does have better teachers for the quran there I will tell you that much, but if you a women or a man with wife and kids do not send them to haramain for arabic and quran. They have better places than that place Search around , you can get scholarship if you apply . Good luck

  9. Salaams. AH, I’m already a Hafidh and my tajweed is a of a good level. I’m looking for teachers who can help me specialise in Qira’ah and teach me the 10 methods of recitation. Where’s the best place to find teachers for this?

  10. Assalamu Alaykum, someone please answer my questions, I can't fin the answers anywhere oneline.
I have researched so much about Quran institutes in Egypt such as Hayati, Haramain, Fayf Ar Rahman, and I'm desperately trying to apply, but I can't any more information online about them whether i search in english or arabic, or whether i search on youtube or google.
I want to apply to be a student and I can't find the admission link anywhere.
I understand some masajid you don't need to apply, can someone tell me how do enrol in that institute then?
Do I travel to egypt then visit the markaz and ask to join?
Is there any telegram group or whatsapp group for these masjids that I can join?
    Jazak'Allah
